Day 261 Taste and Trust

For the Lord is good; his mercy is everlasting; and his truth endures to all generations. Psalm 100:5
Oh taste and see that the Lord is good. Psalm 34:8

God truly is good…all the time.
  • Even when I'm left fatherless at age seven? Yes, God is good.
  • Even when I feel abandoned and misunderstood as a teenager? Yes, God is good.
  • Even when my life choices lead to great pain and sorrow? Yes, God is good.
  • Even when our son is born with severe congenital birth defects? Yes, God is good.
  • Even when my loving, caring mom falls deep into depression and dementia? Yes, God is good
  • Even when life transitions are prickly and challenging? Yes, God is STILL good.
God is not evil. Satan is evil.

I trust God.

His mercy and truth are everlasting.

God Bless your heart with trust in our Good God.

Day 173 Your Red Sea

The wicked flee when no man pursueth: but the righteous are bold as a lion. Proverbs 28:1

I've got a secret. Life is not for wimps.

As we celebrated our 25th wedding anniversary today Steve and I recounted the major events of each year of our marriage. It has been an amazing ride. It has at times been a roller coaster and other times it has been smooth sailing.

I know I can trust that God will get us through the next 25 years too. God is faithful.

This morning I prayed with my friend and counselor, Karen. She has been such a great encourager and has pushed me hard to be bold as a lion as I move into the next season of my life. I thank God every day for her ministry to me and my family. I dare even think where I'd be without her prayer and counsel.

Karen and Murray are standing at the border of the sea - well actually the USA-Canada border. Their papers have been sitting on someone's desk for three years. They have been here working and raising their family for ten years. But a work lay off is sending them back to their homeland of Canada. No papers. No job. No USA for them.

None of us want them to go. We love them so much. God is using them mightily.

So we pray.

The message we got from the Lord as we prayed for this situation was to remember the Red Sea. When the situation looked horrible and the Egyptians were closing in on the fleeing Israelites it seemed hopeless. But they did as they were instructed and headed toward the Red Sea.

The waters parted and they escaped on dry ground. They passed over to their Promised Land.

We are asking God to open the eyes and ears of the immigration specialist holding their file. We want them to see this particular application and approve it. The time is running out. They have to leave the country by Juen 30th when their current papers expire. Will you pray with me for Karen and Murray?

But God is faithful! Can you believe that "coincidentally" this devotional entry in my God Calling book would be about knowing God parts the waters for us. I love those God stops!

Is there a situation that feels like roaring waters standing right in front of you? Is it big enough to keep you from what God has promised? Do you need your red sea to part?

Tell me what you need us to pray about. Let's join together and watch the waters part as we pass over to our own Promised Land.

I want you to know He is faithful. Go forward fearlessly. Tell me all about it because I want to sing His praises.

God Bless your fearless heart.

Day 119 Disharmony

Ask, and it shall be given you, seek, and you shall find; knock, and it shall be opened to you. Luke 11:9

Lately it seems I've been asking God a lot of questions about my future. God makes the problems of life plain. It's most often the way I view them that causes disharmony.

His ways are so much higher than mine. God's kingdom is perfect. My ways are selfish and definitely far from perfect.

I've met so many people in my life who blame God when they don't see things happen the way they want or expect. I've been there myself. I've lived with my expectation rather than anticipation for what God has planned.

Most often things don't go my way because it's not what is best for me. God knows the bigger plan. He knows the beginning and the end. But I end up focusing only on what I can see and I live in disharmony.

For two years after our son Gabe was born with multiple birth defects and many puzzling diagnosis, my life was confusing and I lacked peace. Oh believe me, I wore the Devine smile and buried myself in work. On the outside it appeared there was harmony. That was far from the truth.

I wasn't turning it all over to the only one who had the answers. I was working in my own strength. I was trying with all my might to act like everything was hunky dory when deep inside I was one sad and confused woman.

Through a series of God given encounters with Bible believing and loving people, I realized that all of my self sufficiency was getting me nowhere. It's just like a mouse spinning and spinning on its wheel, going nowhere but working itself into a dizzy tizzy.

I am so thankful that I got off the crazy cycle and started seeking God instead of doing it on my own strength.
In obedience, honesty, discipline and love I found a never ending supply of power that brought harmony, joy and peace to my life.

So now when I feel disharmony creeping into my life, the first place I look is in the mirror. Just like I check my teeth for that dreaded piece of lettuce stuck to my snaggletooth, I check my heart for selfish things stuck there like disobedience, dishonesty and pride. I usually find one or more and I realize it's time for some brushing by the Holy Spirit through confession, prayer and study of God's Word.

The next place I look is the Bible where I always find an encouraging Word. It clears out the disharmony and soon I'm living in harmonious success. I've learned to stop and ask God for my needs. He is always faithful.

God Bless Your Heart,

Gigi

Trust that GPS

Yesterday's devotional was about waiting and trusting. I thought I'd share an article I wrote a couple years ago that goes along with that theme.

Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek his will in all you do and he will show you which path to take. Proverbs 3:5-6 (NLT)

"If only I had followed the directions I'd been given." How many times have I made that statement? The directions were clear. But I ignored them and went my own way. My heart was very confused. I leaned on my own understanding instead of trusting in the Lord. The path I took led me on detours leading to dead end roads. Every once in a while I ended up in the ditch. I have the scars on my heart to prove it.

On a trip to Disneyland we were attempting to find a restaurant where we were meeting friends for dinner. My husband Steve plugged "Maggie" (our Magellan™ Global Position System) into the car lighter. He typed in our destination address. The unit quickly found the van's location at our hotel. Maggie began to announce our turn by turn instructions to get us to the restaurant.

At one point Steve sensed that Maggie was wrong. He made a right turn even though the device indicated we should continue straight down the street. As soon as we turned Maggie objected and the soft voice kept repeating, "At the next intersection, please turn around."

Steve ignored the constant reminder from Maggie. He was sure his route would get us to the restaurant sooner. Several miles later we ran into a dead end road. We were definitely lost.

After turning around, Maggie's GPS system recalibrated itself and got us back on track. We followed the turn by turn directions and arrived at the restaurant a half an hour late and a little frustrated, but we made it. In the process of going our own way, we wasted gas, time and energy.

A Global Positioning System (GPS) uses a satellite view of the road we travel. A GPS receiver calculates its position by carefully timing the signals sent by the constellation of satellites high above the earth. The device sends these signals which determines our position and gives us the direction to our desired location. To accurately calculate our vehicle's position, the timing of the signals is important. If a signal is missed, the system will resend a new signal and then it waits. Also, a lost signal will cause your location to be misunderstood and the directions given may be incorrect.

After I plug in the destination request on my GPS, I must wait for the turn by turn directions. When the signal comes the GPS directs my path and I make it safely to the planned destination.

In the same way, the prayers I send high above the earth work much like the GPS system. I send God my prayer request then I wait for directions. As I follow the directions He'll get me where I need to go.

But many times I get off track. I move too quickly or ignore the directions completely. Depending on my own understanding, I get lost.

One painful life detour occurred after I graduated from college. The relationship with my college boyfriend was not healthy. We broke up several times. After being engaged for over a year, I gave him back the ring. Things were too uncertain.

A year later we got back together and planned our wedding even with the uncertainty unresolved.

By leaning on my own understanding, I ignored the guidance of pastors, family and friends. The doubts I felt in my spirit were muffled by the sound of wedding bells. My six year relationship ended in a painful annulment only six months after our fairytale wedding celebration.

Our hearts were bruised and broken. Precious time was lost. Energy was spent.

We both had to go back home and start over. The healing took a long time. I had to ask God for new direction.

How did I miss the clear direction of God?

I didn't trust with all of my heart. Instead, I went my own way. I had not taken steps to clearly understand God's will in my life. It was a painful lesson but I learned about trusting God in the middle of my pain.

How do I know if the direction I'm headed is really God's will? What steps can I take to understand the difference between my will and God's? Here are the lessons I learned along the way.

1. Study the Word of God to understand His will. It was very clear in the manual for life – The Bible – that I should be equally yoked with my spouse. I was a Catholic marrying a Jewish man. We did not have the same beliefs and we had many other issues that warned us not to marry. We were not equally yoked.

Although I knew this truth, I ignored the warning and went my own way. The Bible had collected dust on my book shelf because I didn't really know how to study it. Once I learned how to navigate my way through the Bible I was astounded by the recipe for life recorded on its pages. But I had to take a detour before I truly understood the power of God's Word.

2. Seek Godly council and follow the advice. God will use friends and family to speak wisdom into our lives. Throughout my college days my family had concerns about my relationship with this man. Friends continuously warned me. A Pastor encouraged me to postpone the wedding until my doubts had been resolved. The day of the wedding my good friend offered to drive me anywhere to get away. I couldn't imagine being a runaway bride. So I went my own way and hit the ditch pretty hard.

3. Pray and ask God for direction before stepping forward. When we listen closely and wait patiently, he'll direct us on the right path. I prayed for wisdom but my ears were not tuned to hear the answer. The music of my own desire was blasting loudly and I failed to hear the warnings. The result was painful.

So where did I go wrong? His will was evident. The path He showed me was clear.

I turned off my warning systems. I failed to trust the clear directions. Trust means I take the path He shows me even if the road seems unfamiliar. God's guidance will get me safely to the final destination. Ignoring it sets me off course and I lose precious time and energy.

God sees my life from His higher perspective. He sees the beginning and the end. He has a good plan and it is to make my life succeed. So when I read His Word, pray and seek Godly council my directions are clear. He then shows me which path to take.

After my failed marriage, God found me at the dead end road. He healed my broken heart. I tuned in to Scripture. I prayed and waited for an answer. In His mercy, God set my feet back on the right path. I turned off the noise of the world and listened carefully for his voice. Then I confidently followed the directions and moved forward in his will.

Three years later I married Steve, one of my best friends. We will celebrate our twenty-five year anniversary in June 2010. We have two grown sons who love and serve God. We've all learned to trust in the Lord and not on our own understanding. Proverbs 3:5-6 has become our trusted GPS system. But in our case, GPS no longer stands for Global Positioning System. We've decided that GPS means God's Plan Succeeds.

It is my job to tune in, send my prayers heavenward and wait patiently for the answer. Then I follow the given instruction. I've learned to wait for the instruction and then trust that GPS because it always leads me on the right path.

God Bless Your Heart,

Gigi

Day 85 Follow Your Guide

I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go: I will guide you with my eye. Psalm 32:8

The message today is TRUST and WAIT. Boy oh boy that is hard to do sometimes. Usually I think through an issue and concoct my own solution when I should be waiting and listening or asking for advice. I move too quickly and disaster strikes. Sound familiar?

Waiting is hard in our instant microwave world isn't it? We want things to happen now and we don't want to wait on God.

But God reminds us over and again in Scripture to wait on Him. He will lead us in the right direction.

God does have clear directions for us if we'll trust and wait.

It might come in the form of a confirmation from a trusted friend. It could be that "ah ha" moment that makes your heart leap because you hear something in a sermon or on the radio or television that resonates with what you are going through. Often times I'll be reading a book and I receive guidance in that moment for something I've been praying about.

In the school of hard knocks I've learned it is so much better to trust God as my guide. When I choose my own way I usually get lost.

Several years ago I wrote this article about learning to trust God as your guide. I will share the article with you in a separate blog. It will be a reminder that God makes a great GPS.

Today I pray that you will trust God and wait for His direction. He is a trustworthy guide.

God Bless Your Heart,

Gigi

Day 16 Friend in Drudgery

"Behold, I am the Lord, the God of all flesh: is there any thing too hard for me?" Jeremiah 32:27

Drudgery. I looked it up in the dictionary to get a better word picture because drudgery is not a word I commonly use. It means dull, menial, distasteful or hard work. All of those words can be part of our day. God is our friend in the drudgery.

So often we only look for God to appear in the big things in our life. But He is there in the day to day, dull or menial things too. He stands by as a friend in the hard work of every day life. He joins us in the things we need to persevere through. There isn't anything too hard for God. He is God over all.

So hang on. Understand that He cares about every little piece of the puzzle. He's big enough for the hard stuff as well as the small stuff. Spend some time sitting quietly before Him and ask Him to be the Lord of ALL. Ask Him to be your every day friend.

That is where I get my joy. Even when life is hard and there are some things I don't understand. I know that nothing is too difficult for God. He sticks closer than a brother and I trust His plan.
~
I continue to pray for the people of Haiti as rescue workers attempt to deliver aid. The effects of the earthquake hit closer to home when my son Zane emailed to tell me the sister of one of his college friends died in the rubble of the orphanage where she worked. My heart goes out to the Hightower family of Port Orchard, WA who lost their 22 year old daughter Molly. She was serving a year in Haiti helping the disabled and volunteering at an orphanage. I'm asking the Lord to be Lord over all that their family is going through. Please keep this family in your prayers.

I'm also praying for Chris Sahlman who just arrived in Haiti last week to serve at another orphanage. Thankfully Chris is okay and so are the children he works with. However, they are waiting for aid. He said the hardest part is the smell of death.

Oh God, I pray you will send ministering angels to meet the needs of everyone in Haiti today. Be merciful Oh God. I admit I don't understand it all. But I know You are there to help. Show yourself big. Let beauty come from these ashes – as you promise us in Scripture. (Isaiah 61) Thank You God that You love every one of us and you catch our tears in Your bottle. (Psalm 56:8) I trust in Your everlasting love that never fails. I ask for wisdom and revelation about where best to help. Heal our land Lord Jesus. Amen.

Day 8 Love Bangs the Door

"They that trust in the Lord shall be as mount Zion, which cannot be removed, but abideth for ever." Psalm 125:1

I thought the title of this devotional was rather strange. Love Bangs the Door. But what it said to me was that sometimes when the door bangs shut on something in my life, it is the love of God closing it so He can open a different way for me. Paul learned the lesson of the closed door when he said "our light affliction, which but for a moment, works for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory." (P18 God Calling) Sometimes the trials we face are nothing compared to the plan God has in store for using it for His glory.

"Life with God is not immunity from difficulties, but peace in difficulties." When I read today's message I immediately thought of my mom. In the midst of some harsh difficulties she had peace. Most of the time. As she got older her peace turned to anxiousness. What caused the change?

After many conversations with her I believe at some point she stopped trusting that God promised to work it all out for good. Fear crept in. She lost her joy when she focused on what was wrong rather than what was right.

Focusing on the negative gets us in trouble every time. I'm not saying we should ignore the challenges as if they don't exist. But I believe when we trust the acceptance of God's will for us we have peace and joy and we will not be moved.

In my own life I've had seasons where I started to lose hope. Just recently I received word that an agent chose not to represent me. Sure I was disappointed but it's not the end of the world. I will not lose heart. By faith I choose to trust that God is for me and not against me. God will make a way where there seems to be no way. Over and again I believe that all things work together for good (Romans 8:28) I ask every day what my next move will be. I listen quietly for the next door to open as I continue to write with hope.

God Bless your heart. Have a great weekend!

God's Help in Transition--Learn to Trust

Steve, Gigi, Gabe, Zane and Kelsey Murfitt

Here is a photo we took a few days after Zane and Kelsey returned from their honeymoon to Maui. We're now a family of five! Welcome to the family Kelsey Murfitt!

I love God's sense of humor. Just as I'm writing a Bible study about transition, I find myself in a major life transition. In the same month I've married off my oldest son, my youngest is moving to his own apartment. Talk about transition! But the cool thing is I've found others - Bible characters - who also went through major transitions and I'm learning from each one of them.

In preparing my book proposal for this study, I've been reviewing the lives of several Bible characters. Like Abraham, Moses, Joshua, David, Ruth, Mary and Paul. I've found some common characteristics of these biblical characters that have helped me through my own transitions.

One common characteristic is trust. These individuals trusted in the God they faithfully served. They spent time with Him and they listened as He gave them direction. Then they obeyed what they were asked to do! What a concept. So simple yet we make it difficult. Usually because we try to go our own way.

So I'm learning to trust God even more today as I work through the transitions of my life. It helps to spend quality time studying God's Word where I receive direction from the Lord. It warms my heart as I learn that I'm not alone in transition. I know I can stand on the promise that He never leaves me or forsakes me. I also know He has a plan and it is good. I just need to sit close to Him and listen for directions.

My favorite part of this transition is that I now have a daughter. I was not blessed with a natural born daughter so God gave me an amazing daughter-in-law in Kelsey Murfitt. She loves Jesus. She loves my son Zane. She studies God's Word. She trusts. Life will be fun as we move forward to the place God directs us. I know I'll learn a lot from Kelsey too.

Zane and Kelsey have transitions of their own. Graduation, weddings, moving, starting new jobs. Wow. Transition with a capital "T".

I am thankful. I know these transition will be an amazing ride. (And they'll make some good material to put in my Bible study too!) :)
